Still going through most of it. The gTLD footprint for Africa is still a very complex problem to solve. (Lack of reliable registrant data due to the GDPR issue.)

Yep, that was a high bar “can’t live with” and I certainly didn’t see anything that fit in that category.

THAT’S what I meant by a “high bar,” not that it was unreasonable to ask.

Is the RDRS moving away to be a tiered system @Alan Greenberg
09:23:26 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
The ccTLDs are having some success making that distinction.
09:24:12 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
Data accuracy is an aspiration for WHOIS data from gTLDs. The ccTLD registries are often in control of all the data whereas the distributed data for gTLD registrars means that the registry doesn't have full access.
09:24:17 From avri doria to Everyone:
Without figuring out legal, v natural, the problem remains intractably large and complex.
09:24:45 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
Legal versus natural is a much smaller probem by comparison.
09:25:19 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
Might be a 3rd party system
09:26:29 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
There's also the NIS2 problem where the European Commission suddenly realise that they need access to the WHOIS data.
09:26:42 From Sivasubramanian M to Everyone:
That distinction would be invaluable in building far greater trust in the webspaces.

In needs a centralized approach or otherwise it will degenerate into a Tower of Babel situation.
09:28:36 From Hadia’s iPhone to Everyone:
+1 Alan I think this is the way forward
09:28:47 From Sivasubramanian M to Everyone:
@John McCormac - HosterStats.com Europe is right. Hope Europe becomes more insistent on relatively general whois, and it's access and accuracy
09:29:39 From Hadia’s iPhone to Everyone:
We should look at what is happening now in relation to NIS2 and how this can in pact all CPs
09:29:47 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
The European Commission is technologically challenged on this issue. Many European ccTLD registries went dark on WHOIS data years ago.
09:30:06 From Hadia’s iPhone to Everyone:
All CPs - new PDP in light of NIS2
09:30:43 From Hadia’s iPhone to Everyone:
It’s now RDAP
09:30:47 From Steinar Grøtterød to Everyone:
We have to remember the sunset of WHOIS for gTLDs in 2025
09:31:23 From Sivasubramanian M to Everyone:
Many other governments are challenged on more fundamental aspects of abuse.
09:31:42 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
@Steinar Grøtterød I think that decision should be reconsidered.
09:32:28 From Sivasubramanian M to Everyone:
That was @John McCormac - HosterStats.com on his Europe cctld comment
09:33:03 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
One of the unintended effects of the disappearnace of WHOIS is that the ICANN MEAC study is probably pointless at this stage.
09:33:05 From Olivier MJ Crepin-Leblond to Everyone:
ICANN's whois records all show: Registrant Name: REDACTED FOR PRIVACY
09:33:16 From Olivier MJ Crepin-Leblond to Everyone:
I am really surprised.
09:33:19 From Hadia’s iPhone to Everyone:
@Alan Greenberg noted
09:33:41 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
@Sivasubramanian M The gTLD and ccTLD WHOIS services and data varies considerably.
09:35:29 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
When it comes to NIS2 and WHOIS, it is like the European Commission is still searching for the "any key".
09:35:34 From Sivasubramanian M to Everyone:
Registratrant's name, with rare exceptions, shouldn't be masked, shouldn't be the name of the lawfirm or webservices provider
09:36:53 From Alan Greenberg to Everyone:
For ICANN.org, the registrant name is not redacted, just the contact details.
09:37:14 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
It is far worse than that, Siva. Lots of records are completely redacted or contain intentionally false data.
09:38:38 From Sivasubramanian M to Everyone:
@John McCormac - HosterStats.com that is what we need to address. Have coffee with ssac once in a while?
09:39:22 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
Too busy trying to make sense of WHOIS and domain names by country for that, Siva.
09:39:35 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Sorry @Avri I was literally making an intervention in the other call while yu were presenting IRT - your all good :-)
09:40:15 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:

09:43:18 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
@Sivasubramanian M Taking all the gTLD domain names by nameservers and registrars, mapping them to thei country of their hosters. WHOIS data is often unreliable or intentionally false on some nameserver domain names.

09:46:21 From Sivasubramanian M to Everyone:
In India, not only whois, but the webspace and content of small to medium business firms map to intermediaries who squat on names and trap businesses.

@Sivasubramanian M with so many connected globally on the internet, I think this approach is no more attractive enough. One has to go a few levels above at the moment to squat on things !! Your thoughts.. - Dr. T V Gopal, Anna University
09:50:25 From John McCormac - HosterStats.com to Everyone:
Thinking outside the box, the format for JVs would be more like backend providers facilitating a registry in a box service.
09:51:50 From Olivier MJ Crepin-Leblond to Everyone:
and more! With AI there are other opportunities too that could generate JVs

This approach has been happening at a ccTLD level for years, Siva. The operation of the registry is outsourced at a registry and registrar level with the string owner getting their cut of the profits. That's going to become more common with the next gTLD round.
