Christopher Wilkinson Biography
Christopher Wilkinson, Chungan, Fujian 3 July 1941
Family: Father – scientist and clergyman; Mother, academic and educationalist.
Two brothers, two sisters,
Childhood: Including some challenging travel from and to Fujian, China: 1944, 1947, 1950.
Early life: Primary and Secondary schools in Yorkshire, England.
Education: Cambridge University and - later – London Business School and Harvard Center for International Affairs (now WCFIA).
Professional life:
1963-1973: Worked with several international agencies on issues such as trade, statistics, technical training and economic development. (Commonwealth, OECD, IBRD, living in London, Paris, Madrid, Washington DC, Lagos).
1973-2005: European Commission, Brussels.
Including secondment as Secretary of ICANN GAC 2002-2005.
Post Retirement activities:
President, European Schools Parents' Associations Member of the Board of Eurid.EU
Chair, ISOC-ECC – European Chapters' Coordination Council.
Relevant contributions, 1995-2005:
- Navigated the transition of EU Telecoms policy from OSI to TCP-IP
- Identified the DNS as an emerging issue; organised multi-stakeholder consultations leading to participation in the IFWP, other for a and in due course in ICANN itself.
- 1998 Assisted †Jon Postel, Jones Day and the White House in the appointment of ICANN's initial Board of Directors.
- Founding member and EU representative in the ICANN GAC's earliest meetings;
- GAC Secretary during Sharil Tarmizi's chairmanship.
