Overview & Background:

Dr. Tarek Kamel Award for Capacity Building recognizes ICANN community members for significant efforts in developing capacity in areas related to ICANN's mission. The ideal recipient will have contributed significantly to national, regional, or global capacity-building programs related to ICANN's Mission; and developed capacity-building programs that positively influenced the multistakeholder and diversified participation at ICANN. The recipient will also have been participant in ICANN for at least five years. The ICANN Board will select the recipient based on the award criteria annually.

 Program Details

Frequency:

Annual, given at ICANN Public Meetings (first award to be presented at ICANN69); Target Meeting is the Annual General Meeting during the opening ceremony.

Eligibility:

At least five years as active participant(s) in ICANN community.

Criteria:

Candidates will be evaluated by the ICANN Board against two criteria:

  1. Contributed significantly to national, regional, or global capacity-building programs related to ICANN's Mission
  2. Developed capacity-building programs that positively influenced the multistakeholder and diversified participation at ICANN

Nominations:

All nominations must include specific and verifiable information as to why each nominee meets the two award criteria, including any further documentation as required to ensure that even evaluators who are not familiar with a nominee would be prepared to evaluate all nominations. Nominators may be called upon to provide further information regarding the nominees (via teleconference). All nominations to be submitted via the Nomination Form. Nominations will open on 16 July 2020, supporting documentation and/or questions may be submitted via email: kamelaward@icann.org by 21 August 2020. Please see the announcement here.

Selection process:

A cross-functional ICANN org review panel considers the nominations in light of the criteria and recommends a shortlist of nominees to the ICANN Board. The Board reviews the shortlist and makes the selection based on the award criteria.

Staff Support:

Staff maintains the Dr. Tarek Kamel Award for Capacity Building Wiki Space, creates the nomination form and collects nominations, provides the ICANN Board with required documentation. Staff coordinates with other departments as necessary for the award ceremony.

Recognition elements:

Awards given at ICANN Public Meetings, preferably Annual General Meeting, during the welcome ceremony with an opportunity to give short remarks. Photo and biography included on ICANN website and on dedicated Dr. Tarek Kamel Award for Capacity Building Wiki space.
