Notes from 14 June 2023 APAC Space Session
The second APAC Space session of 2023 was held in Washington D.C. during ICANN 77. This hybrid session focused on three key topics: Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), Universal Acceptance (UA), and the Registration Data Request Service (RDRS). The session saw the active participation of 41 attendees onsite and 49 participants virtually. Following the community updates, a networking session was held for the onsite participants to interact with one another.
The session was moderated by Mr Satish Babu, At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC). Highlights from each speaker are as follows:
- Ms Donna Austin (Chair, IDN EPDP) shared that the IDN Expedited Policy Development Process (EPDP) team has released the initial report for Phase 1 and is currently reviewing public comments to finalize their recommendations by 10 July. They have also begun work on Phase 2, which deals with second-level IDN variant management issues. The estimated completion date for their work is November 2025, but a more accurate estimate will be determined after considering public comments on Phase 1. The timeline for Phase 2, originally planned for November, may be revised in the coming weeks.
- Mr Anil Kumar Jain (Chair, UASG) introduced the new leadership of the UA Steering Group (UASG). He highlighted the success of the Global UA Day celebration, which had participation from over 40 countries, encompassing more than 50 events and attracting over 9,000 attendees. Anil urged businesses, governments, and academia to evaluate and update their systems for UA compliance and encouraged participation in UA-related initiatives. He also invited the community to join the UASG and engage in UA discussions.
- Ms Diana Middleton (Senior Program Manager, ICANN) provided an update on the RDRS. Formerly known as the WHOIS Disclosure System, the RDRS is a proof of concept service designed to handle requests for non-public registration data of generic top-level domains (gTLDs). Registrars will have early access in September to opt into the system while it will be open to requesters when the service is fully launched in late November.
